So I just heard of something new, a grant given to help start a website. The owners of TheCombatVeteran.com received a grant to help them start their website. I am not sure of the details of the grant itself, like who awarded them the money, etc. But I know it was a private organization. TheCombatVeteran.com is a non-profit website that was built by Combat Veterans in the interest of Veterans. It also caters to Military Enthusiasts. The money received from the grant will be used to for the upkeep of the website.

Grant Proposal Mistakes

It is always amazing to me the stupid mistakes that I find on grant proposals. Little things, like spelling errors and grammatical issues get a proposal tossed in the trash before the grant giver completely reads the proposal. Keep in mind that you want this organization to give you money, just give it to you. All it takes is a little planning to and thought to turn your proposal in to one that gets noticed and the ones that get trashed.

First, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY! I cannot stress that enough. If you fail to include something that the grant giving organization wants in the proposal, your proposal will be tossed in the trash.

Second, when explaining why you deserve the grant, USE MORE THAN ONE SENTENCE OR PARAGRAPH. There is nothing more that the decision makers in grant giving organizations hate more than going through proposals that have little to no explanation. Most grant proposal reviewers will not even read a proposal if it does not have more than one paragraph. Just by seeing only one line or one paragraph explanations voids the legitimacy of that proposal in the grant reviewers mind. Explain in detail why you need that grant funding and why you are going to use it to help society.

Third, BE REALISTIC. I read one grant proposal where the guy actually asked for 69 Billion Dollars to start a church. If I were going to start a church, I think I could do it a whole lot less than that. That guys proposal didn't get trashed, it got passed around on email lists for people to laugh at. Think about it, that guys credibility went out the door right then and there. No would take him seriously for 69 Million Dollars let alone 69 Billion Dollars. Most of the time to start a business or organization it will take multiple sources of funding.

Last, DON'T GIVE UP. If at first you don't succeed... Try, try again. Learn from your mistakes and try again. But remember not to become annoying to the grant organization you are trying to get funding from. There is a difference between being persistent and being a pest.

Besides the basics of using proper grammar, spell check, and having someone else proof read your proposal before submitting it, you’ll also want to write your proposal in a way that shows the grantor that you need this funding for a worthy cause. For instance, when asked to explain why you need the funding, instead of saying:

“I want to throw a raging party for me and the guys and get plastered!”

You could try explaining it like this:

“This funding would be used to study the effects of alcohol on the human body. This study would be ongoing for several weeks and involve multiple subjects of varying height and weight exposed to several types of alcoholic beverages. The purpose of this study is to test the limits of the study subjects in relationship to their body height and weight and determining how much is too much.

The study will be closely monitored and we will have non-alcoholic beverages consumed by a control group for this study. Strict safety measures will be enforced to ensure that the test subjects are protected. One of the requirements for all of our test subjects is that they will not be allowed to drive for a period of 24 hours after the end of the study session and designated drivers will be on call at a moments notice.

After the completion of this study I plan to have my findings published in the American Medical Association Journal of Medicine. I have already contacted the AMA to inform them of this study.”

If you meet those two qualifications then there is grant money available for you. But you have to keep in mind, people who give grants give them for specific reasons or worthy causes. For instance you might receive grant money to make your home more energy efficient. Or you might get grant money to help you go back to school. The trick in obtaining grant funding is to find the right organization that gives money for what you need. Then it is just a matter of contacting that organization or those organizations and correctly filling out their requested materials.

I was talking to them the other day and out of the 35 people who have applied for that specific grant only one person filled out the requested material properly.
